History of the association
The association Delta Cultura has its foundation and roots in Austria. It was founded in June 2002 under the name Delta Culture – Association for intercultural communication by Estela Amarilia Cabral Correia (named Marisa – till today member of Delta Cultura Cabo Verde and the project management of the Child- and Youthcenter), Florian Wegenstein (today project manager in Tarrafal) and Walter Löffler.
After emigration of Marisa and Florian from Vienna to Tarrafal on the capeverdean islands, Delta Cultura started its activities in December 2002. First action was the creation of a Football School for street kids.
In the beginning of 2004 Marisa founded the Batukogroup Batukaderas Delta Cultura which exists successfully till today. This traditional ‘drumming-dancing-chant’ with its roots on the island of Santiago is performed mainly by woman and has had a boom since the funding of Batukaderas Delta Cultura.
With creation of the Football School on the capeverdean islands, Liz Zimmermann has taken over the matters of the association in Austria. What has seemed to be a small honorary job became a nearly fulltime job. Today Liz is chairwoman in Austria and still does her work honorary.
From the beginning the activities in Tarrafal had positive reactions and offers for support. Like this the two vacationists Jennifer Smith and Christian Fu Müller were alerted to the association in December 2002 … today they live in Tarrafal (since March 2007) and work honorary for the Child- and Youthcenter. Among other things they are responsible for this internet page.
The rise from the Football School to a education Center in Tarrafal (the Football School is making part of it) happened thanks to a lot of circumstances that have fallen to the association: mainly and in first place because of a lot of honorary work of all the members of Delta Cultura in Austria and Cape Verde. Thanks to their efforts the community of Tarrafal has offered the land were the Child- and Youthcenter is located and the German Arbeitersamariterbund (ASB) and the German Ministry for Economical Cooperation and Development (BMZ) were won for construction and start-up-financing of the Center.
Among the numerous helpers, interns and ‘simple’ tourists who visited the Center over the years were Ariane Umathum and Vanessa Ebert who remained with Delta Cultura after their visit. Ariane is vice chairwoman of Delta Cultura in Austria and Vanessa is responsible for the funding of Delta Cultura Germany and the first chairwoman of this association.
Today Delta Cultura Cape Verde, Austria and Germany are three independent associations who work very closely together and have the same aim to develop the Center in Tarrafal.
